Original definition of HIPSTER (from Urban Dictionary):

“The term “hipster” is cross-applied from the 1930s Beatniks. The modern hipster is a composite of individuals with a certain bohemian life situation and lifestyle. He or she rejects “mainstream” culture and embraces and contributes to independent culture, and prides him/herself on this.”

Definition of today’s HIPSTER (from Wikipedia)

“Hipsters are the friends who sneer when you cop to liking Coldplay. They’re the people who wear t-shirts silk-screened with quotes from movies you’ve never heard of and the only ones in America who still think Pabst Blue Ribbon is a good beer. They sport cowboy hats and berets and think Kanye West stole their sunglasses. Everything about them is exactingly constructed to give off the vibe that they just don’t care.” — Time, July 2009[4]

Personally, I think the word “hipster” has lost original meaning from the Jazz scene of the 1940-50′s, and has now become one of those “revival” fashion statements. I think it’s heavy on the 80′s fashion trends with a jazzy/grungy feel….a sloppy vintage look to sum it up. I’m not against this trend although the anti-hipster movement is quite amusing. It’s just the “now” trend…it will pass, so I don’t think it should be taken too seriously. And the next trend to haunt the fashion world is….wonder if I should dig out my old Doc Martin shoes and baby doll dress, get the “Rachel” haircut, and start lining my lips with nude lip liner?

What a gorgeous day in Vancouver! I spent the afternoon with the family on Granville Island, and spotted these two lovely ladies on the patio at Sammy J. Peppers. Both of them were dressed with careful consideration of their clothes and accessories – head to toe they looked great! Click on the image for more a more detailed description.

Fashion Trends We Wish Would Die (a Yahoo! article)

Here’s an article I found on the Yahoo! site. I was writing a similar rant for a post, but this pretty much sums it up. I would also like to add LOW RISE JEANS…let’s put an end to butt cleavage and “whale tail” sightings, shall we? So classy.

Here is the article – click on:

I participated in a swap meet at the Nikkei Centre over the weekend and did not expect to find people for my blog but this awesome duo set up their table across from mine! I love how they brought Harajuku fashion to Vancouver. In fact I was inspired to start this blog by photographer Shoichi Aoki, who publishes a monthly magazine in Japan called FRUiTS, covering the street fashions of the Harajuku district of Tokyo. These two looked fantastic and I really felt lucky because I almost did not bring my camera and fashion questionnaire to the swap meet that day. I really hope to bump into these guys again! If Carrie from Sex in the City was a man, this would be him. Shane is very fashionable and enjoys martinis, has a heart of gold and is a truly genuine person. I love him to bits because he is true to himself and puts 110% into what ever he does. We need more people like him in this world. I can not say enough good things about him and I think his friends would agree. He works at the Flight Centre at Coquiltam Centre, so drop by and tell him how gorgeous he is, or plan your next vacation with him or any one of his awesome staff!

Zipang Sushi

Since starting this blog, I’ve been dying to head out to Main St to collect more photos, but being the busy mom that I am makes it difficult for me to stop and ask people for a photo. I FINALLY got a chance to go there, and this time my husband was with me so I HAD to find someone for my blog! While dining at Zipang Sushi, I found a lovely young lady, whose red sweater and gold seahorse necklace caught my eye . She wore a mix of higher and lower end labels, a couple of local designs, and even something from a thrift store! This how to dress cozy and fashionable for a balmy winter day! My wonderful friend, Shane, fell in love with this drink. It is served at the The Refinery, where he had his birthday dinner. Most of the people there were Shane’s workmates from the Flight Centre and they were really cool and outgoing. I had a couple of interesting conversations – one was about following your passion; the other was with Shane’s boss, Tanya and it was about enjoying work. They weren’t deep, soulful conversations or anything of that sort, but I left the party feeling inspired because I appreciate meeting people who follow their hearts and love what they do. It reminds me to stay focused on what I’m trying to achieve with this blog. Although it has been a slow start, I’m really enjoying this process and I plan to stick with it, even if I may be the only person reading it! Anyway Tanya also looked fabulous and had on some gorgeous heels, so check out her photo. Click on the image for more details.

Oh here’s a little plug for the Flight Centre….they rock, so please book your future travel plans through them!

By the way, look out for Shane in future postings; he always looks great, but that night he just didn’t stand out.
